evieWhy did you choose to attend OSU in order to pursue your music degree?

I chose to attend OSU as the campus, town, community, and opportunities for involvement were a great fit. Upon touring the campus and meeting professors, I felt an immediate connection to the Music Department, the OSU family, and Stillwater. I knew I would receive individual attention from faculty and would be able to foster many close relationships. The faculty is deeply dedicated to each student and their commitment to each student’s success, both musically and academically, is outstanding.

What aspects/components of the OSU music department did you find the most beneficial to your development as a musician?

The faculty at OSU set high expectations for my development as a musician and as a "whole student." I was taught to never stop learning and challenged to work hard, take initiative and follow (or in my case, find) my passion. The professors were engaged in my musical pursuits as well as academic interests I had outside of the music department. All of the faculty knew me by name and were fully invested in my experience. I also had the opportunity to play in several large performing ensembles as well as many chamber groups. I was constantly exposed to new music, new ideas, and innovative ways to challenge myself and my peers. Most importantly though, throughout all of these experiences I felt supported and encouraged.

What were some of your favorite things about attending OSU?

There are many things to love about OSU and Stillwater! I became quite involved in Student Life and campus events. I chose to live on campus my entire time at OSU and worked as an RA for 3 years. The opportunities for building community, generating programs and events, and getting connected while living on campus are endless. Mostly, I loved the people I met while at OSU – many of my lifelong friends are those I was either in the Cowboy Marching Band with or worked in Student Housing.

When I was in high school looking at universities, I wanted to find a university that provided the feeling of family within the department, and also a great teacher that I knew I could learn from and develop as a musician.  OSU was the perfect fit for me!

What aspects/components of the OSU music department did you find the most beneficial to your development as a musician?
I really liked the personal attention you got from every professor in the department, even the academic professors!  It really allowed me to focus on what I wanted and needed out of my degree and improve in all aspects of my musicianship.  There were plenty of performing opportunities within the Cowboy Marching Band, Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and chamber music that it really made the years go by quickly.

What were some of your favorite things about attending OSU as a whole?
I developed many lifelong friendships and professional connections in my time at OSU, and it has allowed me the opportunities for jobs and playing gigs that I would never have been offered otherwise.
